Top of the League

Post by jonwoozley » Sat Aug 29, 2020 9:53 am

One year ago little old Woking were top of non league football again. Without that late Torquay equaliser or the late Ebbsfleet capitulation we would have seen out Sept too. A rare event to be celebrated.

Woking did not top the Isthmian League at any point until Christmas 1955, but were toppled by NYD.
Although within a point of the championship in 1957 Woking never topped the division.
It took until Sept 1979 to top the division a second time, but again only for a week.
In October 1990 it happened for a third time, for two months, before the cup runs kicked in.
The fourth and final time was in Sept 1991, and this time we stayed there!
Sept 1994, Scum 0 Woking 1, The Cards top the Conference for the first time. Regaining it in October until more cup runs.
Oct 1995 top again for a few days.
It took until August 2002 to get there again. Then Black September.
After another 17 years of deep frustration, Dowse got us there again, after ten other managers couldn't, and on the smallest budget of any of them.
Will any of us be around if/when it happens again?
Dual meditates,
Non habetis argentum.
