Kendall on the bench each week annoys me even more
Re: Todays game
Coincided with Kendall coming on for Walker. He gave us more energy on the pitch. Two of Diamonds wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 10:30 pmGenerally accepted we were dog's mess today. However on about 77 mins, the crowd visibly and audibly turned and started booing and cat-calling. Suddenly for the next 8 minutes there was some energy, we spent time in the Slough half and that culminated in getting the winner.
We then spent the next 10 grimly hanging on.
Walker would also not have challenged for the ball in the air ‘as physically’ for the winner as Kendall did

Scummers away bring it on …….Stjohn wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 8:14 pmWhen was the last time we played Stevenage? Their last game in the national league, there’s been no cup game has there? I think they do. They even had St Woking”s day didn’t they until they went up.readingcard wrote: ↑Sat Oct 12, 2024 6:03 pmThat was terrible , slough the better team and Will my man of the match
Stevenage away pls
Stevenage away would be a great tie Tbf, the ‘legacy’ fans would love it, good call

This is it for me, Doyle spoke about character and leaders last season, and the type of player he was, I wouldn't expect this, but here we are.Currycard wrote: ↑Sun Oct 13, 2024 11:27 amWe continue to stink the place out with some terrible football. I'm getting very fed up with watching a defender play in centre midfield and a right back play at right wing as if it was a one off to cover injuries fair enough but Akinola is not a centre midfielder and Moss is not a right winger yet we have centre midfielders and a right winger on the bench what is going on.
Our tactic is to play 2/3 short passes out from the back then to hoof a long diagonal ball towards Moss's head which doesn't work and repeat. Slough were OK and played as you'd expect for NLS side but we made them look much better than they are and if you were a neutral with limited non league knowledge would you have known what team was full time and what team was part time? I don't think so.
Conte for me needs to be sent back to Cardiff City as he has no fight, desire, grit or determination and for someone who is at a championship club he got bossed by a NLS right back. He never attacks the full back, delivery is poor and never looks like he's going to score. If you watch his demeanor it resembles someone who can't be bothered. He'll be playing isthiman premier football soon.
Leahy also send back as isn't playing and when he has played he's looked very average. Again another on the books at a championship club but looks more isthmian premier.
Send both back and sign a proper centre midfielder and a proper winger.
This team is soft and lacks real leadership we have no bite and things need to change. Playing one up front against a NLS team is unacceptable and we were lucky to win that game yesterday. Overall it's a real tough watch at the moment and this squad is poor.
A better team destroys us on Saturday but we all know that. Doyle will need to work out quickly that Gorman and DKE are being targetted due to their hot-headedness, and Slough were very effective at targetting DKE and bullying him in the first half. But knowing if he does win the ball he only has 3 defenders directly around him to pass too (Moss, Akinola, Wynter), so theres time to reset if they do lose the ball.
The team is set up lopsided, Im struggling with understanding why we are playing that way, especially with players that play those positions on the bench.
For me, Doyle has signed a team almost to play with wingbacks (bar the exception of the left side), seemingly aborting that now leaving players redundant and oversubscribed in positions, Dyche, Odinisa, Wynter, Harries, Jacobs, DKE, Akinola, Moss, Chicksen all playing for 4 positions, and most importantly a strain on the wage bill.
This poor squad building doesn't happen if we sign an experienced manager who knows how he wants to play etc. And this isn't about the budget, it's about signing the wrong players for positions he wants to play, Doyle said, and I so what quote "we won't just sign players that aren't right for the team and how we want to play".
That's what happened last year, the change of formation indicates to me, he's now lost and in too deep.

However, the counter argument to that is the week before he didnt have Dyche and Timi, and I presume that is why he went to 4 at the back (yes he could have played Moss as a 3rd CB as he has done before but decided not to). MD has obviously worked out quite quickly that Jacobs isnt good enough, as he has got another LB in. In the 9 players you have listed as defenders, we have 4 CBs, all vying for a place in either a 2 or a 3, 2 RBs, 2 LBs and a player who i cant remember when he last played in defence. So, 8 covering 4 or 5 positions, some of which can play elsewhere, is reasonable use of the squad imo. The fact that some may not be good enough is another debate, but as a general rule of thumb that seems about right to me, especially when injuries and suspensions come into play
However, I would agree that the signings do seem to be not about specific positions, but more about bodies into a squad. Moore was obviously a panic buy at the start of the season (was he left out of the squad on Saturday or was he on international duty again), Leahy doesnt look good enough, and apart from occasionally going past his marker in the games he has played (the penalty he won, once against York last week when there was a debate on the penalty as examples), neither does Conte. Bringing youngsters into a struggling squad is never an ideal situation either. The fact that we didnt have anyone else to play LW on Saturday was shown when Ward was put on to play there (have we broken Lewis again!!!)
It also seems that he has his favourites (DKE, Akinola, Walker, Gorman to an extent) which is to the detriment of the team. For me the best XI, in the formation taht MD started with on Saturday would be
Will
Moss, 2 CBs, Chicksen
Ward, Gorman, Andrews, LW
Beautyman
Kendall
players in their correct positions, and not square pegs in round holes

A fair counterpoint in terms of defenders, Ill accept that view.JAM wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 11:33 amall fair commentsMoaners wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 10:22 am

For me it's just all a bit lopsided and naive in terms of transfers and squad selection, he has his favourites, and they play, even if it means 6 defenders etc.
All a bit snookered now while stinking out the place.
Re: Todays game
And yet Kendall, Gorman and Ward with 8 assists between them this season sit on the bench..

Re: Todays game
Conte is OK but goes down the outside every single time. Pretty easy to defend against. Reminds me of Tyreke Johnson.
He made a very odd decision to re-sign Dennon Lewis and an odd one to re-sign Anderson who is still living off a few good games 2 years ago (before he was injured for the rest of that season, obviously).
I kind of get why he re-signed Akinola as he's always fit but no way should he be starting every week.

Re: Todays game
I know that's just one game, but we played attacking football, and played a proper frontline, scored twice, and we got a draw away at a team sitting 2nd (?) in the table.
The post match interview from the Sutton manager was pretty damning, saying how easy it is to line up against us knowing that the back 3 will just lump the ball forward, and again on Saturday, against a NLS side we did exactly the same.

Re: Todays game
I don't disagree too much with that team, maybe just Gorman. However, one reason Doyle wouldn't play that team is lack of height for defending corners and winning attacking headers from any long goal kicks (and long balls from Harries, Gorman etc).JAM wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 11:33 amall fair commentsMoaners wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 10:22 am

with regards to Gorman, IF MD continues to play 2 CMs, and I hope he does as Andrews has looked good in there, then surely he is a better option than Akinola, as was seen at Eastleigh.

Re: Todays game
Walker looks taller than Kendall to me? And if Moss is at right back, he won't be high enough up the field to be a target for Will's kicks.JAM wrote: ↑Mon Oct 14, 2024 4:51 pmwhoever the 2 CBS would be, you would hope that they would be involved in winning headers at defensive corners. Moss isnt small either, and all of Wills kicks atm moment seem to be for him to win in the air, and Kendall is bigger than Walker.
