Euros

Post by JAM » Wed Jun 09, 2021 2:22 pm

I realise these are quite exciting times (or uninspiring, depending on your viewpoint) at the club at the moment, but as I am sure you are all aware the Euros start this weekend

How well do people think England will do. For me, I think if we get to the SFs, having looked at the draw, we would have exceeded expectations.

I am not sure Southgate knows his best XI (though he claims he does), and I am not sure he will play players who others think should play

I think that at present there are only 4 guaranteed starters to the 1st game, being Pickford, Stones, Rice and Kane. I am sure he will play 4-2-3-1, and it will be interesting to see he who plays in the 3 behind Kane. I think Mount, Foden and Grealish, but the only problem with that is that there is a lack of pace for the counter attack with them

The side I think he will pick will be (changes I would have are in brackets)

Pickford
James (Trippier), Mings (Coady), Stones, Shaw
Rice, Phillips
Rashford (Grealish), Mount , Foden
Kane

Who do people think will win the tournament. My choice is France

I am going for Spain, been building nicely

Of course I'd love England to win it, the scenes would just be superb

The only problem with Spain is that they are riddled with the virus. Played the U21s in a friendly game last night and now another player has had to quarantine

The problem with England is that we play far too slowly and have a negative attitude which is a shame as we have some very good exciting young players..

If we play something like:

Pickford
Walker, Coady (/Maguire), Stones, Shaw
Rice, Bellingham (/Henderson)
Sterling, Mount, Foden
Kane

I reckon we could go quite far, although slightly worrying that if we win our group we play Germany/France/Portugal in the last 16.

If we play something like below 7-0-3 which Southgate has favoured against decent teams in the past, we won't win a game:

Pickford
James, Walker, Mings, Stones, Chilwell
Rice, Phillips
Mount, Kane, Foden

Spain under 21s will shock everyone and win it.

That or some team who finishes 3rd in their group.

Surely Grealish (who has never played CM) and Mount are the wrong way round there!

Southgate will go with his trusted players - Henderson will play if 50% fit, as will Sterling (despite being in awful form), along with Rashford.

Personally, whilst I think we’ve got an outside chance of doing well, we have such excellent youngsters that I’d have White, James, Rice, Mount, Bellingham, Sancho and Foden, trying to fit something that gets each of them into the side. I think Southgate’s too cautious to do that though.

Cheers! I suspect Clarke will go with Calum McGregor ahead of Gilmour. But I hope he gets a chance. Looks really decent from what I’ve seen. A proper modern midfielder.

England should set up to entertain, go on the attack & get the country behind them from the off. Give us fans something to be proud of!

My starting team would contain a surprise or two.
3-1-3-1-2

Pickford
Walker Stones Rice
Bellingham
Sancho Mount Grealish
Foden
Kane Rashford

GK picks itself.
Def: Walker for the recovery runs to sweep up, Stones as a ball player, comfortable (albeit occasionally too comfortable) & Rice who I think is a CB more than he is a CDM.

Mid: Bellingham is way more mature than his age implies, a youthful energetic & fearless talent. Sancho offers pace & can dribble/beat a player, Mount, Grealish & Foden can all rotate to cover each other offering plenty creativity

Att: Kane is a hold up player, with an ability to assist or bring in others, dropping deep if required that would allow Rashford to use his pace in behind to mix it up.

We might concede 3, but if we score 4 then that’s entertaining & that’s what football should be.

I don’t want to see all this negative 5-4-1 shite! Get on the front foot, play in their half, get balls into the box early & don’t be shot shy!

3-1-4-2 with no defensive midfielder! That might be a little adventurous...

He has a defensive midfielder, he’s just playing him in a position that I don’t think he’s played in senior football.

I get what you're saying but that line up is probably the craziest I've seen... Only 2 natural defenders!

I'd like to see.

Pickford
Walker. Stones. White. Shaw
Rice
Foden, Bellingham, Mount, Grealish
Kane

Italy or Belgium for me . If he starts Grealish will get crocked by a Croatian hatchet man. We haven’t got the nouse or tactics to get past the quarters. Dark horse Russia.
