Anyone else seen this.

[urlResidents form action group to stop proposed Woking FC development

Predictable but a bit of a hurdle for the football club. Interesting that most of the comments are supportive of the development.

The group has been putting out some misleading images of imaginary bungalows backing onto enormous blank blocks of flats. Hopefully the council see through their rubbish.

Some fair points in the article about infrastructure - but the group is made up of some professional moaners.

The football club could have opened the gate if they asked. There is an appropriately named terrace just behind them they could stand on for their team photo!

If its the council that want this, then most protest groups will just get steamrollered

Exactly as KE says.
It's in the council's interest to do this.

Housing the town desperately needs, a continued commitment to the club and area, an influx of new businesses and roughly £1 million per year in council tax.

If they want it to happen, it will happen. But we have GOT to keep the council on board throughout the process, which we seem to be doing a fairly good job of so far.

The we just have to pay for the increase. If we're going to build a new stadium we may as well future proof it on the developers seeing as they'll be making a fortune out of us.

Exactly. I didn’t get the chance to ask - but I assume the stand that’ll be on the CLT side can be closed for most games - meaning we don’t have to put stewards in there. The whole design is about making money, not facilitating enough fans for one FA Cup game every ten years.

With the best will in the world, when are we going to need a ground that holds more than 7000 on a regular basis ?

Is anyone on here looking forward to 1800 rattling around in a ground that holds 10,000 ?. Good luck with that

Agree. Yeovil and Burton have unbelievably made it to some heady heights up the pyramid. Why can't we do the same? Been said before but we are amongst a massive catchment area, and it is growing all the time. It won't be used every week but the capacity is there when you need it. Nothing wrong with ambition, I'd rather that than sit idle with a decripid ground and declare we are a conf south team and nothing more.

Nothing wrong with ambition, but you have to temper it with reality

Yeovil made the championship and their gates didn't make much more than when they won the Conference. They went up from league one with an average of 4,071

Neither of them got anywhere near 6,000 as a championship club

Yes but the bigger the ground, the more appealing it will be to the floating fan and bigger the attendance. Therefore bigger the budget and ultimately more success on the pitch.

In theory!

It has been mentioned our current set up is not very cost effective. I'm sure the new design plans were taking this into consideration to keep costs at a minimum. Look what a nightmare it is shepherding in and out large away crowds. That needs to change. Look at Dartford, they have a new purpose built ground but you can see it is way too small to seriously progress.

KE in still not understanding that if you want to fit retail/conference/entertainment space within your box to make additional revenue then that box will be a certain size regardless of how many sad gits you'll get rattling around inside it watching football.

Cut it down to 7,000 capacity* and you lose the retail space and that non-football income, losing that won't help the club be self sustaining.

*Council also have a covenant that the development has a 10k capacity stadium, which is flexible as originally it was for a 10k seater stadium.

Fuck me no wonder the nimbys don't understand why it's 10k capacity if some of our own fans don't.

10,000 seats = open air concerts / other sport events eg mma/boxing / David Ike / ground share with big clubs like Aldershot while they build a new ground for conference south... = cash Have to go big and bold
This space intentionally left blank

Plus our current stadium has lasted close to 100 years. Last year we had 3 of the biggest crowds the stadium has seen and that was in in NLS; we could have sold a lot more away tickets against Aldershot; the town is growing fast with businesses coming and possibly County Hall.

Of course it won't be capacity every week but if we were to get in the League there would be some big crowds. Also, as has been said a Stadium is a stadium and reducing capacity doesn't save much money ... and space can be used for off field retail and money making activities

Don’t forget.... when we go to an artificial surface we can open in the week for all sorts of events to a few extra quid. And that lovely late spring break the locals get, just think of all the concerts and festivals the neighbours could enjoy for free.

Would we really get big crowds though? Most teams wouldn't bring much more of an away following than the Conference teams. Plus we wouldn't be winning as much which would make the casual fans lose interest.
