New season start date announced

Post by Spitfire » Mon Jul 27, 2020 8:28 pm

Well, Ollie Baylis has it down as a National League start as of the 3rd October with limited fans in the ground

“ The National League plans to start on Sat 3rd Oct.

Step 2 will begin that day with the FA Cup.

Final games will be on Sat 29th May with playoffs in June.

The League says it’s likely that crowd numbers will be significant reduced due to the social distanced capacity of grounds.”

Wrexham have quoted a communication from National League - mostly a duplication of above, but:

"National League Season 2020/21

Further to a meeting of the National League Board last Friday, the Board has determined the following:

• The scheduled start date of the 2020/21 Season is Saturday, 3 October 2020.

• 46 league fixtures will be scheduled in the National Division, and either 42 or 40 league fixtures will be scheduled in the North and South Divisions.

• The North and South Divisions will commence the season with The FA Cup Second Qualifying Round on Saturday 3 October.

• The final league match of the normal season is scheduled for Saturday 29 May 2021.

• The end of season play-offs are scheduled to take place in June 2021.

Please note the season end date and the scheduling of the play-offs in June is subject to FA approval."

The fa guidance that came out a week or so ago only applied to to clubs in England. Not sure if the Welsh FA or devolved government have decided so could be interesting re Wrexham and their fixtures

It's good to have a definitive date for the start of the season as clubs can now plan towards it. It will be interesting how this affects squad planning and getting players on contracts.

It looks like the government's aim of spectators being at sporting venues from 1st October has been a factor.

The season is starting two months late but is extended by a month so this will still require more midweek fixtures than usual to complete it.

Some away games in May would certainly be welcome.
