Steps 5 and 6 to end immediately

Post by AndyT » Tue Mar 24, 2020 4:00 pm

I've just seen that the FA have declared that all Leagues at Steps 5 and 6 (Combined Counties League, Wessex League, Southern Combination locally) will end immediately. No news on how promotion or relegation will be decided but it could mean Knaphill gaining promotion to Step 4.

Nothing mentioned about Steps 1-4.

Personally, with the money involved, I would prefer if Steps 1 to 4 were completed and especially the National League. How this could be achieved will open up much heated debate.

doesnt really say alot that isnt already known, but the idea that Barrow being promoted without the season finishing cant be right. I can see a number of legal cases if this happens

"As Barrow are currently four points clear of Harrogate at the top of the table, with nine games remaining, one possible option would be to scrap the play-offs completely, promote the Cumbrians as "champions" and allow Stevenage to remain in League Two."

No thank you.

Surely a more sensible option would be to just play the playoffs as they stand now rather than no relegation from League Two?

The League are in an impossible situation though - whatever they choose is going to massively annoy a number of clubs.

The update is: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/52026302
But it seems steps 7&8 will be allowed to call it quits, with the fall-out to come later.
Nothing decided at 5&6, but can't see how one half on non-league will be allowed to abandon, and not the other.

Finish the season in June and July before we all get locked down during the second wave of the virus.

Can't see how that would work if you're predicting a second wave.
Up to 4,000 souls at games would have an even better chance of contracting the virus if it isn't finished yet, as you suggest.
Behind closed doors carries much the same risk for up to 60 people, including staff and officials.
What happens when you run out of players because the majority are sick?

As far as I am aware a decision regarding the EFL and National Leagues hasn't been decided yet. The noise coming from NL clubs last night was that they wanted to complete the season as and when possible.

I think that confusion is being caused by the use of different terminology. Some are using Levels 9 & 10 in reference to Steps 5 & 6 of the pyramid. The EFL and the top steps of the pyramid (ie step 1 & 2) still hope to complete the season. The recent announcement of voiding 2019/20 and expunging the record relates to steps 3 & 4 (ie the leagues immediately below the conference south.

The financial implications might be enough to cause a few clubs to voluntarily drop a league or two.

Bury could complain, and push for reinstatement, on the basis that having been thrown out of the league themselves for failure to provide a guarantee they could complete their fixtures, it transpires that every other club has also been unable to complete their fixtures.

Interesting how clubs lower down are reacting - seems unfair - I would go for finishing this season in any way poss and truncating next season if necessary.

What about regionalising Nat Lg and the expanded play-off structure?

I fail to see how Bury could be reinstated as they hardly exist and have missed every financial deadline set to make payments. The EFL and its member clubs would hrsdly soften their stance on the back of this

I think this season is done for us. Promote Barrow to take the league back to 92 and thats it.

The most likely outcome regarding Bury was that the phoenix club would be placed in the North West Counties League at step 5. That was before the onset of the pandemic. Now it’s anybody’s guess.

unless already referred to elsewhere Therefore apols for repeating- Yeovil have their lawyers looking at securing a 2nd parachute payment from the EFL assuming the season is deemed n+v

Logically dubious. Parachute payments aren’t to help you get back to the league, they are to cushion the transition to a lower budget. Therefore it’s all about financial periods not seasons.
